Our Story
My name is Tara Osburn; I'm 17 and I received my filly, “Scarlett,” through the AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program. I was selected as one of four AQHYA members to receive a foal from the wonderful AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder KT Ranch of Connell, Washington.
As far as Scarlett goes, she wasn't originally supposed to be in the program. I first selected a pretty little chestnut filly with a star, but about two weeks before I had planned to pick her up, she suffered an untimely accident and her future as a riding horse is seemingly out of the question.
KT Ranch kindly let me choose another filly from the group of weanlings they had left for sale. I chose KT Docs Mamba, also known as Scarlett, and brought her home on October 19, 2012. She’s a solid bay filly, without any white markings. She has a beautiful little head, neck and everything else.
In the program, I have to meet with an AQHA Professional Horseman often and take Scarlett to a show, where will we compete in halter, showmanship or lunge line. At the end of the year, I'll have the chance to win a scholarship and a belt buckle or boots. I'm excited for the journey and the chance to share it with you!
A Little Bit About Myself
Why I Would Like to Own and Raise an American Quarter Horse Weanling (My essay that helped me to win Scarlett)
I have loved horses since I first laid eyes on them at six months old. My aunt had over 25 years of experience with American Quarter Horses by the time I came into the world. She taught me horsemanship and breeding and everything she could until she passed last November. She also instilled her legacy in me of love for horses that will never leave. She bought me a filly when I was eight years old and helped me care for her until my mare died of tumors two years ago. Since then we shared her gelding who is a great horse, but more suited for Dressage than anything. I love foals, and I hope that I can show AQHA someday and win an all-around title. I think any of these beautiful project weanlings could get there! Getting one would be a dream come true. I think that doing the project book will be extremely educational and fun, and would give me knowledge to last a lifetime. My aunt left me with a great facility and equipment to continue her lifelong work. This would be the first foal I've raised on my own, but I'm ready for the challenge. Thanks!
Scarlett is my newest addition to our family at our home in Gaston, Oregon. She also has seven other equine friends along with four felines and one canine (all together I have eight horses, four cats, and a dog). I'm a junior in high school and I participate in track and basketball along with being a horsewoman as well. Scarlett and I hope you enjoy our blog and we would love to hear from you!
